In this artist talk, Erica Walker explores place in time & time in place through a project based at Hobcaw Barony. Hobcaw is a landscape shaped by overlapping ecological, cultural, and personal histories. It's 16,000 acres of marshes, tidal flats, longleaf pine forests, and abandoned structures that carry stories of bounty + survival, erasure + permanence, inheritance + removal. Erica spent 35 days on location and over a year collaborating with the land and the left-behind archives at Hobcaw. Throughout the series, the land became an active participant.
Working with historic analog processes, weather, botanical materials, and time, Erica allowed each photograph to emerge through collaboration with the place itself. The resulting images explore how land holds memory and how the photographic process can become a form of listening closely to what the place reveals. The photographs are not simply of the place; they are made in conjunction with it.
Together, we will question what happens when we explore a place over time. How do we learn to listen intently to a place and collaborate WITH the land?
Erica Walker studied photography and filmmaking as an undergraduate in Boulder, Colorado and produced documentaries and educational television programs for a decade. She now holds a PhD and teaches photographic and film-based storytelling to business students in Clemson University's Department of Graphic Communications. She guides students through visual storytelling, analog image-making, and the ethical questions of how we document and interpret the world. Her classes balance technical skill with creative inquiry, encouraging students to work across media and disciplines.
In the past few years, Erica has developed a creative practice at the intersection of science and art using analog photographic techniques, mixed media, and printing on non-paper substrates such as mirror, glass, tile, metal, and wood. She publishes in academic journals, presents at conferences and workshops across the US, and has produced several solo shows of her creative works.
