Kinship Studio, Cumberland, Maryland

Studio residencies and retreats are core to Kinship’s mission to inspire and support creative practice. Designed to meet you right where you are, they are as varied and unique as the people who seek them out. Ranging from completely self-directed to fully guided.

Grant-Funded Thematic Residencies

Twice per year, Kinship offers grant-funded thematic residencies to a cohort of six artists; all thematic residency spaces are currently filled. Join our mailing list to get updates on upcoming calls and fully-funded residency opportunities.

Self-funded Residencies & Retreats

  • Self-funded residencies and retreats are fee-based opportunities that allow you to get the benefit of a residency without the competitive application process. While partially subsidized, they only require a brief application and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Stays can be as short as 3 days or as long as 4 weeks.

  • All residency and retreat programs include your own studio and up to a 30-minute orientation. Additional assistance and private workshops can be scheduled. See guided residency and retreats below.

  • Lodging at Kinship Studio includes private bedrooms in a communal setting with shared bathroom, kitchen, and library. If you prefer more private accommodations, you can book a studio-only residency and stay off-site.

  • Our Kinship Studio coordinator will help you prepare for your retreat and can provide a cost estimate for any additional support or services before you arrive.

  • 50% deposit is paid when you book your retreat. The balance is due one week before your arrival. See retreat rates below.

  • While fee-based residencies and retreats are already partially subsidized, we understand that they are a significant investment for artists with limited income. If needed, we are happy to provide payment plans, guidance, and letters of support for grant funding applications or assistance with creating and promoting a crowdfunding campaign. For those who need additional financial assistance, please indicate that on your request form.

Self-Directed Residency

Self-directed residencies are partially subsidized, self-funded, and completely independent. Artists have around-the-clock access to your chosen workspace/studio. On the day you arrive, we will help you settle in, give you a tour of the facilities, answer any questions about house rules and studio/darkroom procedures, and leave you to your work.

This retreat is ideal for artists who have experience with the tools and processes in their requested studio. Extra technical or creative guidance can be requested at any time during a self-directed residency, subject to additional fees and availability.

Guided Residency & Retreats

Guided residencies and retreats are perfect for individuals who need a refresher, want to learn or refine a skill, need assistance designing or curating a project, or enjoy guidance, structure, inspiration, or feedback while they work. The amount of guidance is up to you and can range from one hour to the entire visit. Guided retreats are custom-designed to meet your creative needs. They provide a unique opportunity to experiment and explore at your own pace. If you are interested in learning more about guided residencies, retreats, or private workshops, please indicate that on your request form, and our studio coordinator will schedule a free 30-minute planning session.

Retreat Rates

Kinship is a non-profit organization. Retreat fees (paid by artists) do not fully cover the cost of your studio or stay and are subsidized by grants and donations. Retreat rates include access to a studio and a 30-minute studio orientation. For those lodging at Kinship Studio, it also includes a private bedroom and shared spaces such as the kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and library. Additional fees for private instruction, workshops, critiques, etc. can be added to any retreat package.

To make Kinship Studio accessible to artists at all income levels, we offer financial assistance through partial scholarships, needs-based discounts, and work exchange opportunities when grant funding allows. If you need financial assistance, please indicate that on your residency request form.
