Recover and Release with Donna Wesley Spencer
Recover & Release with Donna Wesley Spencer
Join us via Zoom on Wednesday, July 29th, at 7 pm EDT
Join us for a multi-layered conversation with Donna Wesley Spencer as she shares work fromRecover & Release, her new book from Daylight Books. Donna spent two years visiting wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centers to photograph and learn why so many wild animals need to be rescued. Her beautiful and tender photographs highlight what's possible when we take the time to approach vulnerable subjects with patience and care. The book holds fifty photographs of animals mid-recovery — owls, hawks, vultures, ducklings — alongside the humans who hold, feed, and care for them with the hope of releasing them back into the wild. Nothing here is rushed.
Donna will be sharing her empathetic and unhurried approach to photographing vulnerable subjects. Together, we will question how our integrity and intention towards our subjects, as well as what we learn along the way, can shape the photographs we create.
How do we know the right time to make a photograph, and when to put the camera down and simply be present?
Donna Wesley Spencer is a fine art photographer whose lifelong practice as a birder led her to Recover & Release, a two-year project documenting wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centers and the people who staff them. She studied photography at the Evanston Art Center during her years in the Chicago area, along with various workshops and study at Penland School of Craft, and is a founding member of Perspective Gallery in Evanston, Illinois. Her other portfolios include A Southern Diary and The Spirits That Remain, and her hand-printed platinum/palladium and vellum-over-gold-leaf series Shared Space — drawn from the Recover & Release project — was recently exhibited at Craven Allen Gallery in Durham, NC. She currently lives in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
