On Nochaway: Lessons in Impermanence with Anna Gage Norton
On Nochaway: Lessons in Impermanence with Anna Gage Norton
Join us via Zoom on Wednesday, November 4th, at 7 pm ET
Join us for an exciting conversation with Anna Gage Norton on her forthcoming book, On Nochaway, from NewSouth Books, an imprint of the University of Georgia Press. Set on family land in South Georgia, the book pairs photography and personal narrative to document the restoration of a longleaf pine ecosystem and explore family legacy, stewardship, and the cycles of life and death.
The talk will trace the project’s development through images from On Nochaway and earlier work, including photographs that have remained in the edit through years of presenting the work. Anna will consider what gives these images their lasting strength, as well as the process of shaping a body of work into a book.
Together, we will explore the process of making a book, including editing, book layout, and author and publisher contacts.

Anna Gage Norton, a native of South Georgia, received her MFA in photography from Tyler School of Art, Temple University. Previously, Norton completed the Resident Program at Maine Photographic Workshops (now Maine Media) and her BA in anthropology from Tulane University.
Norton’s work deals with her relationship to place and centers around questions of historical and geological time, the animate and inanimate, permanence and transience. Her exhibitions include a site-specific video installation, Living Space, at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. A selection of her video stills is published in Elements of Photography by Angela L Faris-Belt, and her video work is published in Rebekah Modrak’s Reframing Photography with companion website as well as Aspect: The Chronicle of New Media Art. Her most recent documentary photography project is featured in Aint-Bad Magazine, Murze Magazine and Oxford American Magazine’s “Eyes on the South,” and she is a 2021 Puffin Grant recipient. Her forthcoming book, On Nochaway, will be published in January of 2027 by NewSouth Books, an imprint of UGA Press.
After a decade of teaching undergraduate and high school-level photography in the Mid-Atlantic region, Norton returned to the South and now lives in Highlands, North Carolina, where she continues her work.
