Lamentations with Tina Freeman

Lamentations with Tina Freeman

Join us via Zoom Wednesday, November 13th, 7 pm ET

Over the course of seven years, Tina Freeman photographed the Louisiana wetlands and Arctic and Antarctic glaciers. In Lamentations, Freeman pairs images from each place in a series of diptychs that function as little stories about climate change, ecological balance, and the connectedness of things across time and space. The large, color photographs in Lamentations make plain the crucial, threatening, and global dialogue between water in two physical states.

Together we will question how photography can help us connect disparate landscapes impacted by climate change. How might glaciers and wetlands speak to one another, and to us, about water in a changing world?

Tina Freeman: For the past forty-five years, Tina Freeman’s photography has focused on revealing interior subjects through the exploration of physical environments and natural light. In addition to architecture and interiors, Freeman’s subjects include urban warehouses and Louisiana’s natural landscape and backcountry swamps. Her project, Lamentations, juxtaposes images of the Louisiana wetlands and ice in the Arctic and Antarctic. The exhibition was on view at the New Orleans Museum of Art from September of 2019 until October of 2020; the catalogue is available from the New Orleans Museum of Art and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Press.

Freeman’s photographs have been published by The New York Times Magazine, House & Garden, Architectural Digest, and many others. She received an “Art in Public Places” commission from National Endowment for the Arts. Freeman’s work has been exhibited in New Orleans, New York, Los Angeles, London and Moscow, and is included in permanent collections of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, the National Media Museum (UK), the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Luiciano Benetton Imago Mundi Collection in Italy.

Freeman has been Senior Curator of Photography at the New Orleans Museum of Art and is President of the Decatur Studio in New Orleans.
