Combining Text and Image to Tell a Story with Neil Kramer

Monday’s, October 3rd - November 7th, 2022, 7 pm - 8:30 pm ET

"A picture is worth a thousand words" is one of the oldest cliches in photography. But if this is true, why do we still have to write those darn artist’s statements?! Like many of you, I love words AND images. Are we less of an artist if we combine the two?

Join Neil Kramer for six weekly conversations that will explore how to combine text and images to tell a more complex story. We will start by examining published or exhibited projects that combine image and text. Together we will look at the ways in which text changes the meaning of images, and images change the meaning of text. Additionally, we will explore what happens when we turn text into graphic images themselves. Finally, we will contemplate the similarities and differences between words and images and how, when combined well, they become more than the sum of their parts and create new and even unexpected ways to tell a story.

Neil Kramer is a storyteller with twenty years of industry experience developing projects in photography, writing, filmmaking, and social media. His most recent project, "Quarantine in Queens," about living with his mother and ex-wife during the Covid-19 pandemic, has won him accolades and awards such as the Portrait Photographer of the Year at the 2020 Annual Photography Awards, 1st Place in Family Photography at the ND Awards, Finalist in the Portrait Project at the Lucie Foundation, and a finalist in 2022 Critical Mass. The project has been featured on NBC’s Today Show, The Washington Post, The New York Post, Buzzfeed, Fox News, Feature Shoot, Petapixel, My Modern Met, Musee Magazine, and media outlets in ten other countries. "Quarantine in Queens" has been called a timely and unique commentary on caregiving, love, and family connection.
