Magic of the Mundane with Frances Bukovsky

Sunday’s, October 16th - November 20th, 2022, 1 pm - 2:30 pm ET

We each come to photography as people living days that are unique in all the many little details within them. The way we make our coffee (or make no coffee at all), who we speak to regularly, and the places in which we spend our time weave a web that contains our lives. How can we make images to deepen our connection to these daily occurrences and tune in to the unexpectedly profound moments in our daily routines? Are there ways that image-making can transform our perspectives on our own lives?

Through thoughtful conversation and question asking, this six-week practice group will encourage us to sink into the mundane to find the magic that exists there. Together we will consider the interconnectedness of our lives within broader themes and relationships while staying grounded within the personal. We gather for deep looking, joyful exploration, and excited curiosity.

This practice group is open to all levels, however, will focus on content rather than the technical aspects of photography. Photographers who explore any genre and image-making process are welcome!

Requirements: Limited to 5 participants We will be using Google Meet (a web service similar to Zoom), so participants may want to familiarize themselves with that platform. Please bring ten images as a slideshow to share to the first meeting to introduce yourself. This is an informal and fun way for everyone to meet rather than a discussion about the work. Each class will begin with a discussion of work made during the previous week, so bring images and thoughts to share! This group is for encouragement and exploration. Each class will end with an inspirational slideshow and prompts for the next week.

Frances Bukovsky (they/her) makes images about chronic illness, disability, and queerness as these topics relate to selfhood, relationships, and medical experiences. They utilize self-portraiture, documentary-style photography, and alternative process prints to approach their dynamic and fluid experience of both illness and gender identity.

In 2018, Bukovsky earned a BFA with Honors in Photography and Imaging from Ringling College of Art and Design. Since then, they have published their debut monograph, Vessel (2020), with Fifth Wheel Press and have been published internationally for their work about chronic illness. Besides their personal art practice, Bukovsky participates in community building through photography as a member of the Kinship Photography Collective.

Bukovsky works as a photography instructor, social media manager, and disability respite care provider. They have a deep-rooted interest in the history and practice of medicine, from historical traditions of healing to modern practices. When they aren’t making photographs, they can be found reading any book that catches their eye, wandering around the woods someplace, or spending time with their cat Edgar.
