Pushing the Edges - Noticing Symbiosis with Frances Bukovsky

Pushing the Edges - Noticing Symbiosis with Frances Bukovsky

April 4th - May 9th, 2024
Meets every Thursday from 6 pm - 8 pm EDT via Zoom for 6 weeks.

How can we dissolve the concrete edges of what we consider individual bodies through photography? This practice group begins with us asking where the edges of our bodies, the edges of our relationships, the edges of human and more-than-human, are seen and felt. Can a more relational perspective shift those edges, or even dissolve them? How does that change the way we photograph and engage with the bodies around us, the bodies that are us?

This practice group will encourage us to play in murky edges, from imagining a body from the perspective of the microorganisms that see bodies as landscapes to roam, to entangling our sense of self within the context of the relationships, stories, and experiences that connect us to other bodies. What happens in our photographs when we blur the edges of human and more-than-human, or self and other? In other words, what happens when we step back from individualism and photograph from a place of connection?

We will begin by noticing the hard edges we perceive in our lives and then move through practices and prompts that will encourage us to explore the interconnected between spaces that touch all bodies. This is a group to play at the edges of your artistic practice and shift your photographic perspective. The focus of the group will be on concept, however technical questions are always welcome. Each prompt in the practice group will last for two weeks to allow for deep exploration.

This practice will have a maximum number of 7 participants.

Kinship uses a pay-what-you-can honor system with a minimum donation or $50. The average contribution for a six-week practice group is $125. Please give as generously as you can. If you cannot afford the minimum contribution of $50 please don't hesitate to request a scholarship.

Frances Bukovsky (they/them) explores the intricate relationships between bodies, places, and identities, particularly in the context of chronic illness, disability, and queerness. They apply interdisciplinary research to self portraiture, documentary photography, and camera-less photography to create projects that connect intimate personal experiences to larger systemic issues. They were born in rural upstate New York, and currently live in Marshall, North Carolina.

Bukovsky earned a BFA with honors in Photography and Imaging from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2018. Their work has recently been featured in institutions including UC Irvine, The Bascom: A Center for the Arts, Circle Gallery at UGA, The United Nations HQ in New York, and TILT Institute for the Contemporary Image. Bukovsky’s debut monograph “Vessel” was published with Fifth Wheel Press in 2020. They have been a participant at Artist in Residency programs at the Peter Bullough Foundation in 2022 and the Goodall Visiting Fellows program at Wofford College in 2024. Bukovsky is a co-founder of Kinship Photography Collective as well as a member of Women Photograph.
