On Limits & Limitations with Erik Mace

On Limits & Limitations with Erik Mace

March 5th - April 9th, 2024
Meets every Tuesday from 6 pm - 7:30 pm ET via Zoom for 6 weeks.

Potential in a question. In a project. In ourselves. What is holding us back? Is it photography itself?

This practice group will explore what’s between us and realizations of our ideas. It’s designed for the stir-crazy artists who feel like we’re consistently approximating resolution. Let’s take advantage of that gap together through intense focus and/or experimentation. What can we add to the photographic medium to expand our line of questioning? What can we take away to further crystalize our intentions?

This group will use photography as a starting point for discovery, but all forms of expression will be encouraged, including writing, sound, and mixed media. Weekly prompts and exercises will be offered as ways to push against the limits of our medium and our own limitations.

Erik is thrilled to have the opportunity to facilitate this practice group as a Photography Artist in Residence at The Bascom, inviting participants to join him in his discovery and creation process.

This practice will have a maximum number of 7 participants.

Kinship uses a pay-what-you-can honor system with a minimum donation or $50. The average contribution for a six-week practice group is $125. Please give as generously as you can. If you cannot afford the minimum contribution of $50 please don't hesitate to request a scholarship.

Erik Mace is a visual artist who uses photography, graphic design, and book arts as his tools of inquiry. As an experimental visual thinker, he is not overly precious with his material. Instead, deeply curious about the power of photography and adjacent media, Erik takes advantage of their limitations. His work is connected by a sense of restlessness where he seeks out messy processes, delighting in how visual and language-based tools can be expressly matched to subject matter, causing a body of work to rise from the chaos

Erik received his BFA in Visual Communications from Washington University in St. Louis and is an alumnus of the Contemporary Photography program at the ICP in New York. He currently holds a leadership position with the Kinship Photography Collective, leading workshops on photography, sequencing, and bookmaking. In 2023, he launched Ramble Editions with Kristen Welles Bartley, as a collaborative vision for photobook publishing. In 2024, Erik was named the Photography Artist in Residence at The Bascom in Highlands, NC.
