Various Small Fires: Exploring Photography through Multimedia with nat raum

Join us via Zoom Wednesday, July 9th, 7 pm EDT

As we continue our explorations of fire together this week, we will be considering the ways that we can feed the fires of our creative practice. What sustains our creative flames, and in turn, how do those flames sustain us? We hope you can join us for an inspiring artist talk with nat raum in which we explore these questions and more through a robust conversation.

nat raum is a multimedia artist working primarily with photography, collage, book arts, and creative writing to create a practice anchored in the form of the book. nat began working with books during their undergraduate photography studies after finding it difficult to pin down their desire for text and narrative to coexist with image in a gallery environment. This led to their eventual obsession with photobooks, and furthered a lifelong interest in all things literary. nat’s passion for diverse and accessible books has led them to both seek and create alternatives to publishing industry norms, and push back against traditional systems. Now, they currently have 24 books published or forthcoming and are the founding editor-in-chief of fifth wheel press, a genrequeer independent publishing house.

Join us for a conversation with nat in which they discuss finding inspiration across media, mixing writing and visual artwork, and independent publishing as a home for multimedia publications. They will also touch on community as a driving force for creativity, as well as how co-curricular pursuits such as writing, editing, and curating can supplement any artistic practice.

nat raum (they/them, b. 1996) is a queer disabled artist and writer based on unceded Piscataway and Susquehannock land in Baltimore.
