As photographers, how do we bear witness to the loss of places we love? How do we document these devastating losses with both respect and beauty?

Join us for a conversation with Benjamin Dimmitt about his powerful and heartbreaking book An Unflinching Look: Elegy for Wetlands.

Dimmitt began photographing in the salt-damaged sawgrass savannas and spring creeks of the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge on Florida’s Gulf Coast as way of examining and reckoning with the ecosystem loss in a place he knows well and loves. To document the progress of saltwater intrusion, Dimmitt spent eight years photographing and rephotographing landscapes that he first photographed more than forty years ago in order to understand what was becoming of his native Florida. His book is both a beautiful celebration and heartbreaking elegy to our precious and fragile wetlands.

Together we will be exploring what it takes to fortify our practice so that we can stay present to long term projects that span years, and even decades. Additionally, Benjamin will be giving us a behind the scenes look at his book publishing process including working with an academic press, creating community partners, and selecting and working with creative collaborators,

Benjamin Dimmitt is a photographic artist and educator. He is the son of a native Floridian and an artist from New York. A graduate of Eckerd College, Dimmitt was born and raised on the Gulf Coast of Florida. He continued his studies at the International Center of Photography in New York City and taught there for twelve years. His photographs have been exhibited in museums, galleries, and festivals internationally and are held in multiple major museums and private collections.
