Initiation by Paula Damasceno

Initiation is an artist book of 26 Risograph-printed pages that brings text and image into a tactile sequence. Written across English, Yoruba, Portuguese, and Spanish, it draws together Orisha iconographies and mythologies with layered histories of the Americas. Risograph reproductions of original tintypes suggest offerings made to the Orishas by unidentifiable, and at times absent, subjects. Housed in a varnished wood and black velvet folder, the work invites a slow, ritual-like engagement.

Cost: $95 (individual buyers) / $175 (institutional purchase)

Exhibitions: Initiation (2024), Horace Williams House/Chapel Hill, NC,
Destierro (2025), Outlook Gallery/Lansing, MI
