Please join us for “It’s All Relative: Making Kin with the Natural World,” project launch and pop-up exhibiton of our month-long series of photography events in and around Sylva, NC, facilitated by the Kinship Photography Collective.
The work featured in this pop-up exhibition serves as both an introduction to Kinship and a source of inspiration for images that local community participants might make. Come see how Kinship members have used photography to help them think about the natural world in different ways. What might you add to the conversation?
Seeing Beauty: A Photography Awe Walk
April 1st, 3:30 - 5:30 pm
During this leisurely 2-hour walk at the Jackson County Greenway, we will use photography to cultivate wonder, joy, and awe. Using simple contemplative photography practice, we will learn how to see and respond to the hidden beauty around us while finding new ways to make meaningful and beautiful photographs.
Listening to the Land: Site-Specific Cyanotypes with Eric William Carroll
Saturday, April 8th, 11 am - 2 pm ET
Participants of this workshop will be introduced to the cyanotype process and create cameraless photographs of objects, plants, and archival materials related to the history of Sylva and the natural environment.
Urban Nature and the Found Object with Anna Gage Norton

Do you ever look down when you walk around town? With some focused attention, you can find many fascinating natural objects. We’ll take a walk, gather what we find, and scan them on the flatbed scanner to reveal the fine details and characteristics unseen by the human eye.
The Urban Photowalk with Erik Mace

Experience nature through an unexpected lens! The urban spaces we inhabit regularly can be rich grounds for connecting to the natural world in ways that photography can uniquely guide us towards. Let’s discover together with an urban photowalk: just us, our cameras, and our open minds about how urban environments and the natural world are having conversations, if only we take notice. We’ll spend time together walking in and around downtown Sylva and regroup after to discuss what sparked our senses…and cameras.

Open during Sylva’s “Greening Up the Mountains” celebration, this exhibition showcases the work of community members who participated in our month-long collaborative community project “It’s All Relative.” Come celebrate your community and the natural wonders of this place and enjoy light refreshments and family-friendly, hands-on activities.
