Casey Visco - Litterfall
Litterfall
Casey Visco
Litterfall—dead plant matter that has fallen to the ground—is ubiquitous in the forest, our backyards and streets. Eventually, it will decompose and enrich the soil beneath it with fresh nutrients or perhaps sprout new life in the spring. There’s an unbelievable amount of diversity, complexity and even beauty in this detritus which usually goes unnoticed.
When in nature, we tend to look upward and outward; at the trees, the mountains, the sky. By bringing specimens into the studio and creating litterfall “portraits”, this project invites viewers to take a closer look at the ground beneath our feet and appreciate this important component in the engine that drives our natural world.
Casey Visco (b. 1983) is an American photographer based in Asheville, NC. Casey first explored photography while attending the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA. Over the years he continued to take occasional photographs, but it wasn’t until the Covid-19 pandemic forced him—along with the rest of the world—to slow down, that he began a deeper practice of making photographs. He’s drawn to the very small and very common things in nature that most people wouldn’t give a second look.
